형용사(Adjectives)의 의미

 

1. classic = typical (전형적인)

   classical = belonging to old time (고전적인)

 

* a classic example = a typical example

* classical music

* classical dance

 

2. considerable (많은, 상당한)

   considerate = thoughtful (동정심 많은)

   considering = for (∼을 고려하면, ∼에 비해)

 

* She has a considerable income.

* It is very considerate of you to buy this book for my brother.

* You look young considering your age.

 

3. desirable (바람직한)

   desirous (바라는)

 

* It is most desirable that he should attend the conference.

* He is a desirable man; I am desirous of employing him.

 

4. economic (경제의, 경제와 관련된)

   economical = not wasteful, saving (절약하는, 절약이 되는, 경제적인)

 

* The economic situation has improved greatly in the last few years; but there are still many economic problems to be solved.

* His wife is a most economical housewife, but the car they run is uneconomical.

 

5. historic (역사적으로 중요한) She located herself behind the curtain.

   historical = not fictional (역사에 관계된, 역사적인)

 

* The American Declaration of Independence is probably the most historic event in modern times.

* Obviously the historical background to the crisis is important.

 

6. credible = believable (믿을 수 있는) ⇔ incredible

   creditable (명예로운) ⇔ uncreditable

   credulous (잘 믿는, 잘 속는)

 

* a credible story = a believable story

* a very creditable conduct = a conduct that deserves praise

* a credulous person = a person who is easily imposed upon

 

7. contemptible = deserving of contempt (경멸받을 만한)

   contemptuous = showing contempt (경멸하는)

 

* His remark was a contemptible one.

* His remark was a contemptuous one.

 

8. continual = succession that is steady but broken from time to time (빈번한)

   continuous = without any interval (연속적인, 끊이지 않는)

 

* He couldn't bear the continual bouts of toothache.

* The space flight was guided by continual correction from Houston.

* The dust and mud on the pavement was washed away by the continuous rain from Monday through Wednesday.

 

9. comparative (비교의, 비교상의)

   comparable (┅에 필적하는)

 

* The comparative degree

* comparative literature

* She lives in comparative comfort.

* There is no jewel comparable to diamond.

 

10. healthy (건강한)

     healthful = good for the health (건강에 좋은)

 

* She looks very healthy.

* Jogging is very healthful exercise.

 

11. industrious = diligent (근면한)

     industrial (산업의, 공업의)

 

* Your father was an industrious farmer.

* the industrial areas of England

* the Industrial Revolution

* industrial estate

 

12. imaginative [imǽdʒənǝtiv, -nèitiv] (상상력이 풍부한)

     imaginable [imǽdʒənǝbəl] (상상할 수 있는, 가상의)

     imaginary [imǽdʒǝnèri/-nəri] (가상적인, 비현실적인)

 

* He is an imaginative poet.

* I tried every means imaginable.

* an imaginary enemy

* an imaginary number

 

13. impressive = able to impress the mind (인상적인, 이상에 남는)

     impressionable = easily influenced (감수성이 강한)

 

* an impressive ceremony

* an impressionable young lady

 

14. literal (문자의, 글자 그대로의)

     literary (문학의)

     literate (학식이 있는) = learned

 

* literal translation

* a literary man

* the literary profession

* He's a remarkably literate young man.

 

15. luxurious = giving a feeling of costing much (사치스런)

     luxuriant = growing thickly (번성한, 풍부한)

 

* They are staying at a luxurious hotel.

* the luxuriant vegetation of the tropics

 

16. memorable = worth remembering (기억할 만한)

     memorial = something that keeps remembrance alive (기념의, 기념하는)

 

* memorable event

* a memorial service (기념식)

* Memorial Day

 

17. momentous = important; serious (중대한)

     momentary = temporary (순간적인)

 

* The solution of the problem is very momentous to the development of our economy.

* a momentary glimpse

 

18. practical = useful, applicable (실제적인, 실용적인, 유용한)

     practicable = that can be done (실행 가능한)

 

* practical English

* He has acquired a practical knowledge of English.

* They are methods that are not practicable.

 

19. political (정치적인)

     politic = tactful, expedient (현명한, 교활한, 책략 적인)

 

* I can't agree with your political view.

* The speech you made at the meeting was a politic one.

 

20. respectable = worthy of respect (존경할 만한, 훌륭한)

     respectful = showing respect in manner or speech (경의를 표하는, 예의바른)

     respective (각각의)

 

* respectable position

* You should be respectful to your superiors.

* They have their respective merits.

 

21. sensible = understandable = reasonable (분별 있는, 현명한)

     sensitive = quick to receive bodily impressions (민감한, 섬세한)

 

* It was sensible of you to follow his advice.

* The eyes are sensitive to light.

* A sensitive skin is easily hurt by too much sunshine.

 

22. woman = an adult female human (성인여성) ⇔ man

     Female = woman or girl (여성, 암놈) ⇔ male

     Feminine = like a woman or a girl (여성과 관련된, 여성적인) ⇔ masculine

 

* Women under the age of twenty-five are eligible for the post.

* Only one female works in our office.

* a female dog

* a female dress

* female organs (여성신체기관)

* female suffrage (여성참정권)

25. successful [səksésfəl] a. 성공한; (시험에) 합격한; 출세한, (회합 따위가) 성대한

     successive [səksésiv] a. 잇따른, 연면한, 계속되는, 연속하는; 상속[계승]의

 

a successful candidate (당선자; 합격자)

a successful business (번창하고 있는 사업)

 

It rained (for) five successive days. (5일간 계속 비가 왔다.)

 

     successive 연속되는 것의 크기나 간격에 상관없이 잇닿는 일

     consecutive [kənsékjətiv] a. (일정한 순서에 끊임없이 계속됨) 연속적인, 잇따른;

26. conscientious [kɑ̀nʃiénʃəs / kɔ̀n-] a. 양심적인, 성실한; 실직(實直)한, 근직(謹直)한; 공들인

     conscious [kɑ́nʃəs / kɔ́n-] a. 의식[자각]하고 있는, 알고 있는(of; that). [opp.] unconscious.

                                        의식적인; 지각 있는, 제정신의; 자의식이 강한, 사람 앞임을 의식하는

                                     n. (the conscious )〖심리학〗의식

 

     -conscious suf. ‘┅의식이 있는’이란 뜻: class-conscious (계급의식에 눈뜬)

27. comprehensive [kɑ̀mprihénsiv / kɔ̀m-] a. 포괄적인, 포용력이 큰; 범위가 넓은; 이해(력)의

     comprehensible [kɑ̀mprihénsəbəl / kɔ̀m-] a. 이해할 수 있는[가 빠른](to)

 

a comprehensive mind (넓은 마음)

a comprehensive knowledge[survey] (광범위한 지식[조사])

the comprehensive faculty (이해력)

The science problem was comprehensible to them.
