[부정사의 관용적 표현-숙어]

105. To tell the truth, I don't like Chinese food. (솔직히 말하면)

 

106. To be brief, the book is interesting. (요약하면,간단히 말하면)

 

107. I am anxious to see my lawyer at once. (기꺼이┅하고자 하다,┅하기를 열망하다)

 

anxious [ǽŋkʃǝs] ɑ.

① ⦗한정 용법⦘ 걱정스러운, 불안한, 염려되는(uneasy); [주로 서술적] 걱정하여, 염려하여《ɑbout; at; for》
       • an anxious feeling 불안한 느낌
       • an anxious look 걱정스러운 표정
       • I am anxious ɑbout[for] his health. 그의 건강이 염려된다.
       • I’m anxious that he may[might] fail. 그가 실패할까봐 걱정이다.
       • She was dreadfully anxious lest he should be late. 그녀는 그가 늦지나 않을까 몹시 걱정하고 있었다.

열망하는, 매우 …하고 싶어하는《for; to do》

       • He is anxious for fame. 그는 명성을 얻고 싶어한다.
       • He is anxious to know the result. 그는 결과를 몹시 알고 싶어한다.
       • We are anxious for him to return home safe. 그가 무사히 돌아오기를 진심으로 바라고 있다
       • We are anxious that you will succeed. 우리는 당신이 성공하시기를 간절히 바랍니다.

마음 죄게 하는, 조마조마하게 하는

       • an anxious business 신경이 많이 쓰이는 사업
       • We had an anxious time of it. 우리는 몹시 걱정했었네.

anxiety [æŋzáiəti] n. 불안, 걱정, 염려, 근심, 긴장

anxiousness [ǽŋkʃǝsnis] n. 불안, 염려
anxiously ɑd. 걱정하여, 마음을 졸이며; 갈망하여
       • She anxiously awaited his arrival. 그녀는 그의 도착을 학수고대했다.

 

108. It is likely to rain. (1. ┅할 것 같다 2. ┅하는 경향이 있다, ┅하기 쉽다)

 

109. He is sure to come here. (반드시 ┅할 것이다)

       = I am sure that he will come here.

       = I am sure of his coming here.

 

110. He is certain to succeed. (반드시┅할 것이다)

 

111. You are free to stay hereas long as you like. (자유로이 ┅하다)

 

112. He is apt to forget. (=be liable to=be prone to=be likely to)

           (┅하는 경향이 있다, ┅하기 쉽다)

 

113. Children who play in the street are liable to be injured or killed by automobiles.

                                                 (┅하는 경향이 있다,┅하기 쉽다)

 

114. He entirely failed to understand it.

       cf) He failed to entirely understand it. <분리 부정사>

 

 

114-1. It was our duty to bravely resist the enemy.

 

114-2. He told me to politely attend to the customer.

 

115. He knows French, not to speak of English. (┅은 말할 것도 없이)

                                     = to say nothing of

                                     = let alone

                                     = not to mention

                                     = needless to say

                                     = needless to add

                                     = without mentioning

                                     = still more

                                     = much more

                                               = to say nothing of

                                               = let alone

117. To be frank with you, I don't like her. (솔직히 말하면)

        = To tell the truth

        = To be plain with you

        = To be sincere

        = To level with you

        = Frankly speaking

        = To give him justice

        = If we do him justice

 

119. To begin with, I don't like the color. (무엇보다도)

       = To start with

       = In the first place

       = First of all

        = To be brief

                 = incidentally = viz. = viz : videlicet 《L.》 즉《보통 namely [néimli]라고 읽음》

 

 

       • Two girls were absent, namely, Nancy and Susie.  (두 소녀, 즉 Nancy와 Susie가 결석했다.)

 

          cf) He is aso-called sleeping lion. (소위(所謂), 이른바, 흔히 말하기를)

        = To add to his difficulty,

        = To crown his misery,

        = What makes the matter worse,

 

125. Disobeying is a bad habit, to say least of it. (적어도)

        = Disobeying is a bad habit at least.

        = To be certain

        = Surely

        = Certainly

        = To do his utmost

 

128. To change the subject, he lived a simple life. (말은 다르지만)

        = To return to my subject
